The National Museum of Anthropology (Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia, Cordoba 45, col. Roma, Mexico DF, cp. 06700) in Mexico City contains the world's largest collection of prehispanic Mexican art and ethnographic objects from Mexico's present-day indigenous groups gathered since the 18th Century. It was founded in 1865 and it is home of magnificent examples of master works created in the last thirty centuries covering the cultures from the southwestern of the United States to the southern border of the Maya civilization (in the modern frontier with Guatemala and Belize). Collections include monumental sculpture made in local volcanic or limestone, frescos and mural painting, ornamental objects and jewellery in gold, jade and precious stones, ceramic, canvas, and documents.
